Short Ride puts you on a bicycle and points you down an obstacle course designed by someone with no regard for your safety. Sawblades spin across the track, spikes line the drops, and swinging traps time themselves to catch anyone travelling at a comfortable speed. Getting to the end of a level in one piece is the entire goal, and the four arrow keys are how you do it: Up pedals, Down brakes or rolls you back, and Left and Right tilt the rider to keep the bike level.
The lean controls are the ones that separate this from a straightforward riding game. Your bike has weight, ramps launch you into the air, and how you land depends entirely on how you were tilted when you left the ground. Come off a bump nose-down and you’ll plant your rider face-first; hold a slight backward lean and you’ll roll away from it. Speed is a similar trade-off. Charging at full pedal clears some hazards that a slow approach would never survive, while other sections punish exactly that and require you to crawl forward and time a gap. Learning which sections want which approach is the whole game, and since a crash costs you only a tap of the Spacebar, the levels are built around trying again.
Tips for Finishing a Course Alive
- Lean back before you land. A small backward tilt in the air puts your front wheel down first in a controlled way. Most crashes are landing accidents, not collision accidents.
- Scout the section, then commit. Roll forward slowly to see what’s coming, back off with the Down Arrow, then take a proper run at it once you know where the hazard sits.
- Use the brake as a timing tool. Swinging and rotating traps have a rhythm. Stopping just short of one and waiting for it to pass is almost always safer than trying to outrun it.
- Restart instantly. Spacebar puts you straight back at the start. Fast retries are how you learn a level’s timing, so don’t sit and watch the crash animation.
