Take volleyball, remove the people, and put cars on the court instead. That’s the premise, and it works better than it has any right to. You drive a car on your side of a net and try to knock the ball over it in a way your opponent can’t return. Cars jump, which is how you reach anything above bumper height, and they block, which is how you stop a smash coming the other way. A match is over quickly: first to three points wins. One player uses the arrow keys or WASD; in two-player mode, player one takes the arrow keys and player two takes WASD on the same keyboard.
Everything hard about it comes from the fact that a car is a terrible volleyball player. You can’t reach up and place a shot — you can only put your bumper somewhere and let physics decide the rest. Where the ball hits your car determines where it goes, so a hit off the nose sends it very differently from a hit off the roof. Add the jump timing, which has to be early enough to be in the air when the ball arrives, and you get a game that’s genuinely easy to start and awkward to master. Three points also means one bad rally is a third of the match.
Getting Better at the Net
- Jump before the ball arrives. Your car needs airtime, so commit early. Jumping when the ball is already overhead means you rise underneath it and miss.
- Aim with the part of the car you hit with. A glancing contact off the front sends the ball flat and fast; hitting under it lifts a high, slow return that’s easy for your opponent to punish.
- Stay near the middle between rallies. Recovering to a central position covers both corners, and in a first-to-3 match you can’t afford to be out of position for even one point.
- Block instead of swinging. Against a hard smash, just putting your car in the ball’s path is more reliable than trying to time a hit, and it often drops the ball short on their side.
