How to Play Clonium

The board is a grid of cells, and each cell holds only so many pieces before it can’t hold any more. On your turn you add a single piece to a cell that’s yours. That’s it — one click, turn over. The whole game comes out of what happens when a cell reaches its limit: it bursts, throwing its pieces outward into the squares around it. Any enemy cell caught in that spray flips over and becomes yours, pieces and all. If a neighbour was already close to full, the extra pieces tip it over too, and the burst keeps travelling. A quiet-looking move can take half the board. Last player with cells on the grid wins.

So every piece you place is doing two jobs, and the second one works against you. Stacking a cell moves it closer to detonating in your favour, but it also turns it into a prize — if your opponent’s chain reaches it first, everything you loaded into that square changes hands in one move, and the momentum flips with it. That’s the tension that makes such a simple rule set worth replaying. Do you keep filling the cell that’s one piece from bursting, or place somewhere safe and let them move first? Reading the board means tracing the chain before you commit: not just what your click does, but what it leaves standing next to their almost-full squares.

Tips to Win More Chain Reactions

  • Count their cells, not yours. Before placing, look at which enemy squares are one piece from bursting. Anything you build beside those is a donation waiting to happen.
  • Bait the first explosion. A player who detonates early spends their position for a small gain. Placing safely and letting them commit often hands you a much bigger chain on the reply.
  • Grow along the edge of their territory. Cells pressed against enemy squares convert the most when they finally go off, because every direction the pieces fly is a target.
  • Trace the whole chain before you click. The moves that lose games look harmless — one piece into a crowded cluster that turns out to feed straight back into their side. Follow it two or three steps first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Clonium free to play?

Yes. It plays free in the browser, and there’s nothing to download or sign up for.

What makes a cell explode?

Filling it past what it can hold. Once a cell is full, the next piece added bursts it and the pieces scatter into every adjacent square — which can set those off in turn.

How do I actually win a match?

By taking every cell your opponents hold. Pieces landing in an enemy cell convert it to your side, so the game ends when one player is the only one left with anything on the board.
